I was on a plane ride when the idea for this book first came to mind. I was thinking of the meandering nature of life and relationships; and was at a time I was also reading a lot of Children’s literature with my young daughter. At the time I didn’t have any writing apps on my iPad, so I opened up notes and began to write. I ended up writing a first draft on that trip. On my next plane trip, I started to draft illustrations and ideas using a basic drawing app and my finger. I had intended on working with an illustrator and using my stick figures as a guide for them, but after sharing my book with others, it was the simplicity of the stick figures that made them laugh and enjoy the book even more. Thus, they remain.
In life, and especially in any relationship, you need to know when to lean in and to lean out. It’s about leaning into the joy of the other person, watching their excitement, being encouraged by their ideas, and helping make them come true. It’s about going with the flow.
Whether you’ve just received the book as an engagement gift, wedding gift, anniversary gift, or coupled with a basket of other fun gifts, my hope is that you smile when you see and read it. And, that, in relationships, as in life, you never know what’s going to happen if you give a girl a diamond.
